2024 Ford Expedition Review

| Updated 3 Days Ago
The 2024 Ford Expedition is a full-size SUV starting at $55,630—but you can likely score a better deal with the model’s 2025 version soon to hit dealership lots. This Ford offers three rows of seating in most trims, but drivers can also opt for two rows. Ford released its Expedition in 1997 in response to the public’s growing interest in large SUVs that didn’t compromise power. The idea behind the first Expedition was to create an SUV reminiscent of a three-row Ford F-150.
MotoPickers Rating: 7.9/10
Ford’s 2024 Expedition is part of the model’s fourth generation, introduced in 2018. Minor updates to this production year include:
- A new Wild Green exterior color
- Standard front tow hooks that come with an all-wheel-drive (AWD) XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trim containing the heavy-duty trailer tow package
- USB-C charge ports in the second row
However, we’ll cover some drawbacks to this vehicle, including Ford’s decision to reduce complimentary Connected Navigation from three years to one year. While this Expedition offers a high towing capacity, a robust V-6 powertrain, and vast interior dimensions, our review will analyze whether its downsides, like average handling and pricey upper trims, are significant enough to warrant you looking toward competitors.
Primary rivals of the 2024 Expedition include:
- Chevrolet’s Tahoe
- GMC’s Yukon
- Toyota’s Sequoia
- Nissan’s Armada
- Jeep’s Grand Wagoneer

Exterior spotlight
The Expedition’s extensive wheelbase, measuring 210 “, facilitates its cabin space, which we’ll cover more in-depth in our review’s next section. This length is longer than Chevrolet’s Tahoe, GMC’s Yukon, Toyota’s Sequoia, Nissan’s Armada, and Jeep’s Wagoneer. However, if drivers seek more length, the 2024 Expedition also comes in a 221.9” wheelbase configuration.
Ford offers 2024 Expedition drivers 18”, 20”, and 22” wheel sizes. 22” 12-spoke polished aluminum wheels are standard on the peak Platinum trim. Selecting the stealth edition package will also give you 22” wheels, but their appearance differs from the Platinum grade with a black-painted aluminum design.
The base 2024 Expedition XL STX contains 18” machined-face aluminum wheels with magnetic-painted pockets, and the Timberline model drives on 18” high-gloss black-painted aluminum wheels. Those looking for 20” wheels can select the XLT’s special edition package, with 20” bright machined aluminum wheels with dark carbonized gray painted pockets. However, wheel sizes are far from the only aspect differentiating the 2024 Expedition lineup’s many trims.
A 2024 Expedition Timberline has tailgate badging with a mountain logo and red contrast trim on the front end that shines more than most of the lineup’s models. The stealth performance package brings sleek black “Expedition” lettering on the hood and red brake calipers, while the Texas Edition brings trim-exclusive badging and LED reflector headlamps. Those prioritizing LED exterior lighting can also consider the King Ranch model, which has LED reflector headlights and signature lighting.
Selecting a Platinum 2024 Expedition model gives you satin aluminum and chrome accents you won’t find in grades such as the Timberline. Available exterior zone lighting, standard on Platinum, Platinum Max, and Timberline grades, contains four zones you can control independently or simultaneously.
Many look toward the Expedition for its dynamic interior, but the exterior presents value through offerings like variable wheel sizes and sporty design options. Still, while its longer wheelbase translates to some interior perks, it can also create challenges during daily driving, such as parking.
Interior close-up
Interior spaciousness is a significant part of the Ford Expedition’s appeal—and the 2024 model year maintains this advantage with seating for up to eight passengers. Longer wheelbases translate to the 2024 Expedition containing 104.6 cubic feet (cu. ft.) of cargo space behind the first row, 63.6 cu. ft. behind the second row, and 19.3 to 20.9 cu. ft. behind the third row. If you’d like more organization for rear storage, you can select the available cargo management system, which includes aspects like a retractable shelf.
Earlier, we discussed how the 2024 Expedition’s several trims distinguish themselves with a wide range of exterior design options—and the same goes for the interior. The Timberline model features black leather-trimmed seats with contrasting orange stitching. Ford carries this contrast into areas like the dashboard, which contains a thicker horizontal orange trim piece, giving the cabin a more dynamic feel. A Platinum model has one of the most luxurious interior designs with optional leather-trimmed Carmelo seating surfaces.
The Mahogany color scheme available in the Limited model forms a bolder contrast through a ratio of around 70 percent mahogany to 30 percent black trim. The King Ranch grade has the letter W on its seatbacks to represent the running W signifying the King Ranch property in Texas. The XLT Special Edition package contains a more clean aesthetic with tan upholstery and contrasting black trim elements.
Ford equips the 2024 Expedition with optional third-row power-reclining seats, and this third-row won’t crush adults’ legs like many competitors. Available second-row tip-and-slide seats can create more legroom via easy adjustments. An optional panoramic vista roof makes the cabin feel even more spacious.
The Expedition’s cabin continues to impress with spacious dimensions and comfortable/adjustable seating surfaces. Still, Jeep’s Grand Wagoneer, GMC’s Yukon, and Chevrolet’s Tahoe exceed the Expedition’s cargo capacity behind the third row.
Power and performance
Ford’s 2024 Expedition doesn’t disappoint on the power front. This full-size SUV’s horsepower ranges from 380 to 440, while its torque spans 470 lb.-ft. to 510 lb.-ft. Each model features a 10-speed automatic transmission, and drivers can choose between standard rear-wheel drive (RWD) or optional four-wheel drive (4WD).
The mid-range 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine produces 400 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft. of torque on Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum grades. A 3.5-liter EcoBoost high-output engine with 440 horsepower, a sport-tuned suspension, and a dual exhaust system gets the job done for those seeking the highest level of power. Even the base 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine thrives on the performance front with direct injection and twin air-to-air intercooled turbochargers, which optimize responsiveness.
However, one performance area that’s not super responsive within this full-size is the handling, which is sluggish and imprecise. Ford compensates some for this handling with available continuous controlled damping, which adapts the suspension to road imperfections it recognizes ahead via a mounted grille camera. Additionally, while the 2024 Expedition’s steering has room for improvement, its ride feels smooth with independent front and rear suspension.
This Ford’s seven drive modes, which you can manually select RWD or 4WD within, include:
- Eco
- Normal
- Sport
- Tow/Haul
- Grass/Gravel/Snow
- Sand
- Mud/Ruts
Fuel economy is below average, at 16-17 MPG in the city and 19-23 MPG on the highway, but towing is exceptional, at 6,000 lbs. or 9,200 lbs. with the optional heavy-duty trailer tow package.
Drivers who frequently go off-road will find that the Timberline model offers the best capability in this area. It has a 10.6” ground clearance, underbody shielding, an underbody skid plate, and a one-pedal drive mode, where you can low-speed crawl and brake only using the accelerator to pay more attention to the road.
GMC’s 2024 Yukon falls short of the Expedition’s horsepower with 355 to 420 and torque ranging from 383 lb.-ft. to 460. The 2024 Tahoe also offers less power at 277 to 420 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. to 460 lb.-ft. of torque. Toyota’s Sequoia, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and Nissan’s Armada similarly fall short of the Expedition.
Tech overview
Aside from roomy interior dimensions and powerful EcoBoost engines, the 2024 Expedition’s higher price point stems from its tech layout. One of this SUV’s most family-friendly features is its available rear seat entertainment system with dual display on the back of each front seat headrest. These displays can function in sync or separately. There’s also the optional Bang & Olufsen sound system, which carries sound to each row via 22 speakers and a subwoofer. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto complement this audio setup.
In the first row, drivers can select a 12” horizontal or 15.5” vertical LCD display. There’s also an available digital instrument display that gives you a straightforward reading of driving data with a 12.4” width. The Wifi hotspot can accommodate up to ten devices at one time, and an optional wireless smartphone charging pad keeps you connected to vital features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. If you don’t get the wireless charging pad, all Expeditions include six USB charging ports.
The 2024 Expedition offers BlueCruise tech as an available feature. This autonomous tech provides hands-free driving capability on highways at normal speeds and stop-and-go traffic for a full range of operation. This automation helps drivers reduce fatigue, but it’s essential to recognize that BlueCruise is Level 2 self-driving tech. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) rates a vehicle’s autonomous capabilities on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best grade.
Safety capabilities
Ford’s 2024 Expedition received the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s highest passenger crash protection score of five stars. Let’s take a closer look at what led to these ratings by evaluating what specific systems this production year has to offer.
Notable standard safety features within the 2024 Expedition include:
- Rear parking sensors
- Rearview camera
- Blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert
- Lane departure warning
- Automatic high beams
- Automatic emergency braking
While this Expedition’s large displays already provide a solid amount of assistance for reverse maneuvers, rear parking sensors and rear cross-traffic alert provide additional layers of protection in these situations for added peace of mind. The blind spot information system combines its audible and visual driver notifications indicating hazards with automatic steering assistance to help you avoid a collision. Lane departure warning similarly features this assistive steering, while automatic high beams make night drives more convenient.
Available add-on safety features standard in higher trims include but aren’t limited to pedestrian detection, a surround-view camera system with trailer reverse guidance, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and lane-centering assist.
Pedestrian detection provides the automatic emergency braking system with a more refined ability to spot people walking in higher-risk areas such as cities, and the surround-view camera system offers a 360-degree view of your immediate surroundings. Traffic sign recognition can communicate information on signs you may have missed, such as speed limits, and lane-centering assist makes subtle automatic steering adjustments to help you avoid activating features like lane departure warning.

Final verdict
The 2024 Ford Expedition remains one of the more competitive full-size SUV options on the market. Its downsides, such as imprecise steering, expensive upper trims, and lower fuel economy, aren’t enough to overshadow its robust engine lineup, roomy interior, and cutting-edge tech, which is why we’re giving it an 8/10 rating.
