There’s an SUV that’s commonly overlooked despite its 20-plus-year presence on the auto market—and this model is Toyota’s Sequoia. Toyota markets the Sequoia as offering a reliable, durable, and family-friendly design, so our review will take a closer look at the model’s 2024 year to determine if this advertising is accurate.
MotoPickers Rating: 7.6/10
The 2024 Sequoia is a full-size SUV starting at $61,275—but you can likely score a better deal since Toyota has begun advertising the model’s 2025 production year. Toyota introduced the 2024 Sequoia as part of the nameplate’s third generation, which was unveiled for 2023. An angle we’ll be investigating is whether this new generation is more, less, or equally as polished as some of its rivals, which include Chevrolet’s Tahoe, Ford’s Expedition, GMC’s Yukon, Nissan’s Armada, and Jeep’s Wagoneer.
Toyota offers its 2024 Sequoia in five trims, with new additions including the available Nightshade package with darkened exterior accents and the TRD Off-Road package, which is optional within the Platinum grade.
SUV shoppers may be drawn to the 2024 Sequoia’s comfortable ride, a hybrid option that balances power and efficiency, and a lengthy list of standard and available tech features. However, our review will dive into potential drawbacks, such as excess cabin wind noise, third-row constraints, and more.
Learn more about the 2024 Sequoia and what it has to offer with our findings below.
Exterior spotlight
Toyota’s 2024 Sequoia features standard LED auto-leveling headlights with sequential turn signals. In other words, these headlights provide increased nighttime road visibility and more clearly display turn signals to enhance your and your passengers’ safety. LED taillights and fog lights are also standard.
Wheel options range from 18” to 22”. The sides of this SUV contain available power-extending tow mirrors, which move outward at the press of a button to increase visibility while pulling heavy loads and retract for daily driving. Roof rails come in satin-black, black chrome-plated, and dark-black chrome-plated configurations.
Opting for a TRD Sequoia trim gives you a front skid plate for additional durability. A TRD Off-Road grade flaunts rear pillar chrome or black badging, and the TRD Pro contains a gloss-black hood badge and window molding in addition to dual-tip exhaust instead of standard single-tip exhaust.
Exterior color options include:
- Blueprint
- Ice Cap
- Wind Chill Pearl
- Celestial Silver Metallic
- Magnetic Gray Metallic
- Midnight Black Metallic
- Supersonic Red
- Smoked Mesquite
- Terra
- Lunar Rock
- Solar Octane
Rain-sensing windshield wipers are available, which we’d like to see as standard, considering that less expensive vehicles, like Tesla’s Model Y, have this feature as standard. While the exterior can be considered durable, it feels wide behind the wheel, which can present challenges when squeezing into a parking spot.
While the competing 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition have standard LED headlights and taillights, these models don’t offer the Seqoia’s standard auto-leveling headlights. The 2024 Seqoia’s wheel and roof rail options are of the norm for its class, but its color options, with bold choices like Solar Octane orange, stand out from rivals like the Tahoe, which present a more muted palette.
Interior close-up
Behind the 2024 Sequoia’s third row, drivers receive a competitive amount of rear cargo space measuring 22.3 cubic feet (cu. ft.). Folding down the third row expands this cargo capacity to 49 cu. ft. Third-row seats can come equipped with an available power-folding option for optimal convenience, and a panoramic moonroof helps the cabin feel more open.
Upholstery options include fabric, SofTex synthetic leather-trimmed seats, and leather-trimmed seats. Drivers looking to upgrade this cabin’s comfortability can select available heated and ventilated first and second-row seats. Optional semi-aniline leather-trimmed seats feature contrast stitching to enhance aesthetic appeal.
Second-row passenger seats can come in a captain’s configuration, but the capacity will be reduced from eight passengers to seven. While the Sequoia has a rugged, durable reputation, the interior’s instrument panel features soft-touch materials and center console and door surfaces. A leather shift knob is standard, but you receive a red-striped leather-wrapped shift knob with the TRD Pro, in addition to a Toyota heritage passenger dashboard badge and all-weather floor mats.
Optional Dark American walnut wood-grain interior trim, aluminum sport pedals, and a heated steering wheel add premium touches. Some SUVs in today’s market offer solid rear cargo capacity but lack interior storage solutions for smaller items. The 2024 Sequoia features a multi-level adjustable cargo shelf system that’s accessible when you fold down the third row. This shelf system has a high weight capacity to optimize capability.
Overall, the 2024 Sequoia provides a comfortable ride, but there is noticeable wind noise within the cabin at highway speeds. Additionally, the third row is too tight for adults, and some may find this row’s position awkward due to its elevated height, which contributes to more limited headroom.
While the 2024 Sequoia offers competitive cargo space exceeding rivals like Ford’s Expedition, it falls short of Chevrolet’s Tahoe and GMC’s Yukon.
Power and performance
The 2024 Toyota Sequoia features a V6 hybrid powertrain delivering 437 horsepower, 583 lb.-ft. of torque, and up to 22 combined MPG. This powertrain works alongside a 10-speed automatic transmission, providing smooth shifting, while a nickel-metal hydride battery promises long-lasting durability.
One of this full-size SUV’s most impressive performance specs is its maximum towing capacity of up to 9,520 lbs. The Sequoia’s standard multi-link rear suspension helps maintain towing stability, and an optional load-leveling rear height control air suspension system can lower or raise this model’s height for increased adaptability. However, adaptive variable suspension is available instead of standard, which we’d like to see change considering this SUV’s starting price.
Toyota’s 2024 Sequoia contains Drive Mode Select, which features standard drive modes such as Eco, Normal, Sport, Tow/Haul, and additional available modes. These optional modes include Comfort, Sport S, Sport S+, and Custom. Optional Crawl Control will optimize your grip on rugged terrain. You can enhance this SUV’s grip with the available electronic rear locking differential; the Sequoia balances durability and comfortability on the road with lightweight and high-strength materials.
While a hybrid powertrain helps this SUV avoid guzzling too much gas during activities like heavy-duty trailering, you’ll find a slightly higher combined fuel efficiency of 24 MPG within a rear-wheel drive (RWD) 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe.
Toyota doesn’t offer standard all-wheel drive (AWD) within all of its 2024 Sequoia trims. However, the Tahoe won’t match Sequoia’s horsepower, similar to Ford’s Expedition and GMC’s Yukon. Nissan’s Armada falls far behind in fuel efficiency, with 13-14 MPG in the city and 18-19 MPG on the highway. Jeep’s Grand Wagoneer is the only full-size SUV produced in 2024 with a higher maximum towing capacity, at 10,000 lbs, than the Toyota Sequoia.
Tech overview
The 2024 Sequoia offers an available 14” audio multimedia touch screen 6” larger than the standard version. This Toyota’s optional wireless smartphone charging is another feature that we think should be standard, but you’ll receive wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Toyota gives you a choice between the 2024 Sequoia’s 8-speaker audio system or its available JBL-branded 14-speaker counterpart.
This SUV’s multi-information display measures 12.3” and is customizable to help you find a presentation that works for your preferences. The optional digital rearview mirror enhances your environmental awareness with a rear camera projecting a more comprehensive perspective of the area behind your vehicle. You can zoom in and out using the digital mirror to better suit your setting.
In addition to selectable drive modes, the 2024 Sequoia can pair the digital display rearview mirror with a trailer backup guide with straight path assist into an available package to streamline towing adventures. Toyota also offers an optional trail WiFi camera, which assists in helping you maintain a straight reverse driving path when driving in reverse with a trailer.
While Toyota offers several available tech options for the 2024 Sequoia, it enhances this model’s value with a standard panoramic view monitor providing 360-degree views around the vehicle. Panoramic view monitors aren’t standard across the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and GMC Yukon lineups.
Navigation is a vital driving asset that’s not always standard. Toyota 2024 Sequoia buyers receive a complimentary 1-year Drive Connect subscription, which includes cloud navigation. Drivers also get three months of free SiriusXM access. Remote Connect, which is free for the first year, allows you to wirelessly complete vehicle commands like starting the 2024 Sequoia from your smartphone and locating your SUV. However, we’d be more impressed with Remote Connect if its free usage extended beyond one year.
Safety analysis
The 2024 Toyota Sequoia received the NHTSA’s (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s) highest-possible passenger crash protection rating of five stars. Let’s take a closer look at its standard safety features helping form this exceptional grade.
Standard safety
Many of Sequoia’s 2024 standard safety features are grouped under Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.5 system. This system includes:
- Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection
- Full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control
- Lane departure alert with steering assist
- Lane tracing assist
- Automatic high beams
- Road sign assist
The pre-collision system with pedestrian detection warns drivers of impending collisions with another vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist before automatically activating brakes when necessary to help drivers mitigate or avoid collisions. Full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control is accessible on highways at speeds above 20 MPH and enables you to keep a safe distance from the vehicle you’re following via automatic braking and acceleration.
Lane departure alert with steering assist and lane tracing assist will warn drivers drifting without an active turn signal before implementing subtle automatic steering inputs. Automatic high beams eliminate the tedious need to manually switch your headlight on and off for oncoming traffic, while road sign assist reminds you of information you might have missed from posted signs like speed limits.
Toyota also supplies this full-size SUV with blind-spot and rear cross-traffic monitors. As of now, the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has not released an overall passenger crash protection rating for the 2024 Sequoia. While thoroughly evaluated by the IIHS, Ford’s Expedition and Chevrolet’s Tahoe didn’t receive a Top Safety Pick+ or Top Safety Pick designation. Jeep’s Grand Wagoneer received a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS.
The NHTSA based its five-star rating for the 2024 Toyota Sequoia on frontal barrier, side barrier, side polls, and rollover resistance crash tests.
Trim guide and owner considerations
Below you’ll find starting prices and key features differentiating each of the 2024 Sequoia’s five grades.
Sequoia SR5 ($61,275)
The base SRT trim has 18” alloy wheels, Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, and an 8” display, which we’d prefer to see in a bigger size to better align with the model’s higher starting price.
Sequoia Limited ($67,675)
Graduating to a Limited trim gives you 20” gray-painted and machine-finished alloy wheels, SofTex synthetic leather upholstery, and the larger 14” central infotainment touch display.
Sequoia Platinum ($73,865)
Wheels remain 20” on this grade, but change to a machined-finish black alloy configuration. You’ll also receive a panoramic sunroof and premium LED headlights with sequential turn signals.
Sequoia TRD Pro ($79,110)
The TRD Pro variant boasts a unique Toyota heritage front grille, 18” TRD Pro matte-black forged-aluminum wheels with TRD center caps, and trim-exclusive off-road suspension.
Sequoia Capstone – $78,265
Capstone buyers receive 22” dark chrome and machined-finish alloy wheels, semi-aniline leather-trimmed seats, and power-extending running boards for easier vehicle entries and exits.
Warranty info
Toyota offers 2024 Sequoia buyers a three-year or 36,000-mile basic warranty, whichever comes first, and five years or 60,000 miles of powertrain coverage.
Final verdict
The 2024 Sequoia’s most impressive aspects are its robust powertrain outperforming the competition in horsepower, exceptional maximum towing capacity, and comfortable ride. However, drawbacks worth considering include a higher-priced base trim, run-of-the-mill third-row seating, and a carryover design from its 2023 revamp that’s not as stylish as many of its competitors, such as GMC’s Yukon and Chevrolet’s Tahoe. The Yukon and Tahoe exteriors aren’t as busy as the Sequoia’s, but that’s not necessarily bad.
While Toyota’s 2024 Sequoia could use some more standard feature upgrades within its base trim, it compensates with its hybrid powertrain that doesn’t force drivers to sacrifice fuel economy for its capabilities. We’re rating the 2024 Sequoia at 7.6/10 and recommend starting at the Limited trim before moving up.
