| Updated 3 Days Ago
BMW’s 2025 X7 is a full-size SUV with three grades starting at $83,500. These models include the core X7 xDrive40i, the X7 M60i, and the Alpina XB7. While the 2025 X7 has remained mostly unchanged from its predecessor, BMW has added a significant update to this SUV’s available driving assistance package.
Motopickers Rating: 9.2/10
You can now use the driving assistance package’s eye-activated lane change feature, which allows you to initiate automatic lane changes by looking at the corresponding side view mirror. This feature is available at speeds up to 85 MPH. Drivers previously had to activate these automatic lane changes with a physical turn signal input. The 2025 X7 is still part of the model’s first generation, introduced in 2019.
Upsides we’ll highlight for the 2025 X7 include:
- Robust engine choices
- Smooth, comfortable, and agile handling
- A well-appointed interior with capable displays
Our review also elaborates on this luxury SUV’s potential downsides, including interior dimensions and certain tech ergonomics. The 2025 X7’s primary rivals include Mercedes-Benz’s GLS, Audi’s Q7, Land Rover’s Range Rover, Cadillac’s Escalade, Lexus’ LX 600, and Lincoln’s Navigator.
Our review below explains how the 2025 X7 compares to the competition and its mid-size BMW X5 SUV counterpart.
Exterior spotlight
X7 xDrive40i
The 2025 X7 xDrive40i offers sleek, available crystal headlights and an optional M Sport package that provides wheel and trim options, such as larger 22” M Sport alloy wheels, gloss-black interior accents, and more. Standard wheels are of the 21” Y-Spoke bi-color variety and come with all-season run-flat tires. Side mirrors on the 2025 X7 xDrive40i are power-folding and heated, and roof rails are satin aluminum to match exterior trim throughout.
Like many BMWs, the entry-level X7 contains a roof spoiler with a center brake light and chrome exhaust tips. You can select non-metallic or metallic paints, and standard headlights are LED and adaptive, meaning they adjust based on steering and road conditions. BMW also equips the X7 xDrive40i with programmable LED daytime running lights and LED taillights. High-gloss black aero blades enhance aerodynamic performance and looks alongside features like the active kidney grille.
X7 M60i
The 2025 X7 M60i’s standard wheels are 22” and receive additional stopping power from M Sport brakes with blue calipers. This X7 model also comes with a 2-axle adjustable air suspension, which helps drivers change this SUV’s height with a button up to 80mm. Drivers receive high-performance sound with the M Sport exhaust system and M sound control button.
Like its xDrive40i counterpart, this BMW offers nonmetallic or metallic paints, but differentiates itself with features like a standard illuminated kidney grille.
Alpina XB7
The peak Alpina XB7 has standard crystal headlights and a distinct front spoiler with chrome accents. The standard wheels are 23” and include a 20-spoke design unique to the Alpina line.
XB7 drivers also receive an Alpina signature exhaust system with quad tailpipes, a model-exclusive front apron, rear spoiler, and rear diffuser, and an illuminated kidney grille.
Exterior consideration
This X7’s new headlight design is dividing drivers. While we feel the headlights’ narrower configuration complements more prominent front fascia features like the air curtain vents, some find their appearance too thin.
Interior analysis
X7 xDrive40i
The 2025 X7 xDrive40i has seven seats in three rows. Buyers can increase second-row comfort by selecting optional captain’s chairs. This model’s synthetic leather upholstery has a quality look and soft feel, and accents like fine line stripe brown high-gloss wood trim help elevate the cabin’s atmosphere.
Drivers receive a standard cargo cover for the rear cargo area with velour carpeting. The front seats have a multi-contour, power-adjustable design and enhanced support for shoulders and thighs. Front passengers can also use a 2-way manual later adjustment for their comfort headrest and save seat settings with the memory system.
Automatic climate control covers four zones, and an active-charcoal micro-filter ventilation feature traps fine particles like dust and outside odors for more comfort. The steering column contains a convenient power-adjustable design, and front passengers receive additional heating on their armrests and the steering wheel.
X7 M60i
Instead of the X7 xDrive40i’s Sensafin upholstery, the X7 M60i contains extended merino leather, an anthracite Alcantara headliner, and fine-line black wood trim complements. The three-spoke multifunction M sport steering wheel is leather-wrapped, and a panoramic moonroof features a 2-piece glass panel design.
Drivers also receive multi-color adjustable ambient lighting and acoustic glass, helping shield passengers from loud outside noise.
Alpina XB7
The 2025 Alpina XB7 features a hand-stitched Lavalina leather steering wheel and an instrument panel with a Nappa leather finish. Illuminated door-sill finishers with the Alpina nameplate help distinguish this trim, which also includes Alpina floor mats and walnut natural black trim.
Like the X7 M60i, the XB7 contains an anthracite Alcantara headliner. Drivers can opt for a six-seat configuration with a captain’s chair and upgrade the interior with the available panoramic sky lounge LED roof.
Interior consideration
While the 2025 BMW X7 offers well-appointed interiors, some rivals offer far more passenger and cargo space. These competitors include Lincoln’s Navigator, Cadillac’s Escalade, and Chevrolet’s Suburban.
Power and performance
X7 xDrive40i
The 2025 X7 xDrive40i doesn’t compromise on performance. Its 3.0-liter twin-power turbo inline 6-cylinder produces 375 horsepower and a 0-60 MPH time of 5.6 seconds, and it utilizes a 48V mild hybrid system.
This model has an 8-speed automatic transmission with launch control, paddle shifters, sport, and manual shift modes. It can achieve 20 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway. All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard, and drive modes include Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport. Smooth handling stems from dynamic stability control with brake fade compensation, a start-off assistant, dynamic traction control, and brake drying.
X7 M60i
The 2025 X7 M60i’s standard 2-axle air suspension system allows ride height adjustments up to 80mm—but that’s not all this variant offers. Its 48V mild hybrid 4.4-liter BMW M twinpower turbo V-8 powertrain produces 523 horsepower and a 0-60 MPH time of 4.5 seconds.
Alpina XB7
The 2025 BMW Alpina XB7 thrills with its 4.4-liter V8 bi-turbo engine, which is good for 631 horsepower and a 0-60 MPH time of 3.9 seconds. This model’s 8-speed automatic transmission contains Alpina Switch-Tronic technology, which provides quicker response times during manual shifting.
Alpina sport suspension benefits handling with active roll stabilization, while an integral active steering system helps maintain comfort while optimizing agility. Drivers seeking more athletic handling can lower the ride height by up to 1.4”.
Performance consideration
Audi’s Q7 produces a slower 0-60 MPH time than the BMW X7 by over a second but offers superior fuel efficiency, similar to Mercedes-Benz’s GLS 450.
Tech overview
X7 xDrive40i
The 2025 X7 xDrive40i contains BMW’s operating system 8.5, which helps power a 12.3” driver gauge cluster and a 14.9” touchscreen infotainment system. Drivers can access Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly using the 14.9” display, while wireless smartphone charging maintains connectivity. WiFi hotspot capability comes with an initial 3-month/3GB trial and remote over-the-air software updates keep tech up to date.
BMW remote services for the X7xDrive40i include remote locking/unlocking of doors, light flash commands, climate preconditioning, and more.
X7 M60i
The 2025 xDrive40i contains a HiFi Sound System with a 205-watt digital amplifier and 10 speakers, but this model gets an upgraded Harman Kardon Surround Sound Audio System with a 464-watt amplifier and 16 speakers. A drive recorder allows you to film journeys and document instances like accidents, while gesture control helps you manage certain vehicle features like audio volume with a hand motion.
Alpina XB7
The 2025 Alpina XB7 essentially contains the same tech setup as its X7 M60i counterpart. Key tech differences between the two models are centered around performance.
Owner consideration
BMW’s 2025 X7 is well-equipped with tech across its entire lineup. However, many features require you to sift through tedious touch screen menus, and some may not want to opt for a more expensive trim with gesture control.
Safety
Neither the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) nor the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) have rated the 2025 BMW X7’s crash protection capabilities. Still, you can gain more insight into the 2025 X7’s safety by studying its features below.
Standard safety
Automatic high beams within the 2025 X7 switch your brights on and off as needed to avoid blinding oncoming traffic and tedious manual inputs. A rear-view camera enhances environmental awareness, but you’ll need to select a 2025 X7 XM60i to receive a standard surround-view monitor with a 3D view.
BMW equips its 2025 X7 with an active driving assistant containing:
- Frontal collision warning
- Active blind spot detection
- Lane departure warning
- Speed limit info
Active park distance control helps X7 drivers avoid hitting obstacles during parking with audible and visual alerts, as well as automatic braking. Another convenient automatic feature is the 2025 X7’s rain-sensing windshield wipers with adjustable speed.
This luxury full-size SUV’s connected package professional supplies real-time traffic information and, in some cities, on-street parking information. The package also includes live weather, connected navigation, and hazard preview data. You can use the 2025 X7’s intelligent personal assistant for natural voice commands on features such as navigation.
Dynamic cruise control uses semi-autonomous technology to keep you at a preset speed and distance from the car you’re following with automatic braking and acceleration. If the active protection system senses an impending collision, it’ll automatically pretension passenger seat belts, close the X7’s windows and moonroof and initiate post-crash braking. An impact sensor also automatically unlocks doors while activating hazard and interior lights.
Trim guide and X5 comparison
Below is a complete list of 2025 BMW X7 models with starting prices ordered from least to most expensive and some of their highlight-worthy features.
X7 xDrive40i – $83,500
xDrive40i owners receive soft-touch Sensafin upholstery, the new BMW operating system 8.5, and two displays spanning almost 30”.
X7 M60i – $110,900
The X7 M60i features larger 22” standard wheels, ride suspension adjustable up to 80mm, and sleek darkened exterior trim from the Shadowline package.
Alpina XB7 – $152,400
Drivers seeking the highest-performing X7 are best suited to an Alpina XB7 with its 631 horsepower and 3.9-second 0-60 MPH time. The 2025 Alpina XB7 also provides ride height adjustment control for more dynamic handling, distinct badging, and a rich leather interior.
Warranty information
BMW offers 2025 X7 drivers a four-year or 50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty, a 12-year unlimited mileage rust perforation limited warranty, and four years of roadside assistance with unlimited mileage.
Final verdict
The 2025 BMW X7 is well-equipped, but it’s worth noting that it’s relatively expensive for its class, especially when you climb into its higher-performance models. Rivals like Audi’s 2025 Q7 and Genesis’ 2025 GV80 contain less-pricey starting costs of $60,500 and $57,700, respectively.
While a bit expensive, the 2025 X7 justifies its cost with powerful engines, refined handling, and a comfortable interior. Still, drivers with larger families must sacrifice some cargo space behind the third row. If you’re seeking X7 features, fewer seats, and more cargo space, the 2025 X5 may be a better option.
By comparison, the 2025 X5 offers better fuel economy and prices its top M variant at a starting price of $124,800—far less than the Alpina XB7. A 2025 X5 also contains the 2025 X7’s addition of the hands-free highway assistant, allowing you to activate automatic lane changes by turning your eye toward the mirror closest to your maneuver’s direction.
The X5 is a two-row mid-size SUV. Those preferring a high-performance three-row SUV might find the 2025 X7 is a quality fit, but drivers prioritizing space in this driving class are better off with a model like Cadillac’s Escalade.
If the X7’s high-performance nature, design, and array of features appeal to you, we recommend sticking with the X7 xDrive40i or the X7 M60i, as differences between the X7 M60i and its more expensive Alpina XB7 sibling aren’t significant enough to warrant the price gap for many. Despite some minor critiques, BMW’s 2025 X7 deserves a 9.2/10 rating.
